NZSG Branch EmblemNew Zealand Society of Genealogists - Nelson Branch

 The Attic Notice

The aims of our Nelson Branch are to provide:

  • Opportunities to gather and to share their interest in family histories and genealogies,
  • To help and encourage each other in research, and
  • To continuously develop facilities and resources to record and preserve our past.

Our library of genealogical material:

While this has items from across New Zealand and from the UK, as well as some other countries overseas, our focus is on the 'top of the South Island'; that is, the Nelson, Tasman - Bays and Marlborough region.

Branch members meet regularly at 7.30pm on the fourth Monday, Feb - Nov at Nick Smith's Hall, Corner Waimea and Quarantine Roads, Annesbrook.  Activities include exchange of information, specialist speakers, visits to local repositories, research days and projects.

Each year we index the public announcements in The Nelson Mail.  Copies of Family announcements (birth, marriage and death notices) are kept throughout the year and an index created.

Local resident Mark Moorhouse is well advanced in the mammoth task of photographing all graves in the Nelson & Tasman areas.  The images are being given to us and we are currently working our way through them to create indexes.  (Many of the old graves are deteriorating and may not survive into the future and so these images may, in time, become the only record of the grave.)

Each year, committee member Judith Fitchett provides three introductory genealogy courses at the Elma Turner Library, Nelson, using their online resources.

The purpose of our kete basket:

To enable us to share a summary of our library holdings with family historians and genealogists. (History takes on a new perspective when ancestors participated in important events from times gone by, or lived through challenging times.  The whole community benefits and becomes richer by having stories of ordinary people recorded and preserved for the future.
