May was born in Auckland on November 21st 1884. She studied art at Elam School of Art, and later moved to Australia where she was involved in the prohibition movement and other church activities. She travelled extensiviely in Queensland and South Australia, speaking to audiences about the evils of alcohol. Once she had returned to New Zealand she married and she and her husband purchased a farm in Richmond. They later took over the management of Alexander Home in the mid 1920s. She became Matron of the home.  From the late 1930s until the early 1940s she became a lay preacher in the Richmond Methodist Church.
