Local Disasters

Share photos, video and personal accounts of disasters or significant weather events in the Nelson-Tasman area. 

Natural Disasters include:

  • Landslides
  • Earthquakes
  • Drought
  • Hurricanes
  • Tornados
  • Extreme cold -  Blizzards
  • Extreme heat  - Heat Waves

Other types of disasters: 

  • Plane Crashes
  • Shipwrecks
  • Whale Strandings
  • Pandemics

The disasters can be recent, such as the December 2011 floods, or more historic like the 1929 Murchison Earthquake. If you want to tell your story, or you have photos or video to share with others, you can share it here.  

Contributing to the Local Disasters Basket

Everyone is welcome to add items to the basket, but you do need to register before you can contribute. Registration is quite simple, it involves providing a name and email address so the Kete administrator can contact you if they need to. Please read the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy before you register.

Legal Information

If you want to add photos or other items to the basket you need to be the legal owner of them, if you aren't the legal owner you'll need to get the owner's permission. Please comply with the Copyright laws of New Zealand.

If you are contributing photographs or other information about a living person to the basket, please ask their permission first.

Making your old photos digital

If you want to add your non-digital photos, video, or slides/negatives to the Local Disasters basket the Richmond Library has equipment you can use in the library free of charge.  This includes an A3 colour scanner (provided by the Aotearoa People's Network Kaharoa), and a 35mm slide/negative scanner. The Library also has a video camera and sound recording equipment if you want to record your personal account rather than write it down.  Please contact the Richmond Library for further information.
