Cathleen Hermione (Mina) Silke was born in Wellington and raised in Manakau. She had family in Motueka, including her Grandmother Mrs Edward Fry Sn.

Mina worked in Motueka apple-picking, hop picking and later at the Laura Ingram Kindergarten. For a time she worked temporarily as an unqualified teacher at Motueka High School, while also raising four children. In 1962 she gained her Certificate in Homecraft Teaching and went on to teach cooking and sewing at the High School and she later taught at Parklands until her retirement in 1974.

While working at Parklands she became interested in traditional Māori harakeke or flax weaving, particularly tāniko weaving.

Mina died in June 2008, aged 99.
