Frank Eliot Hobson (1886-1915)

A biography of Trooper Frank Eliot Hobson (1st NZEF serial no,7/727), a young man from a small mining town in County Durham in northern England who in 1906 emigrated with his brother George to New Zealand, worked as a farm cadet on a coastal Kaikoura sheep station and in 1911 bought his own farm in Lloyd's Valley, Ngatimoti. After WWI broke out he joined the Second Reinforcements of the NZ Expeditionary Force on 27 October,1914, being assigned to the 10th Nelson Squadron of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. Frank was killed on 31st May, 1915 during a struggle to hold No 3 Outpost at Gallipoli. He is commemorated in Turkey at the Lone Pine Memorial and at the Ngatimoti War Memorial in Tasman, New Zealand.
