Abstract

John Sutton was born in Hill Street, Richmond in 1904. His parents were Oliver Sutton and May Constance Sutton, nee Tunnicliffe, from Wai-iti. John had two brothers and two sisters, including Vic, and Yelvie who was the youngest.

His great grandfather was George F. Sutton. His father used to help farm on Muntz's land, where Waimea College is now.

The Sutton family farmed in the area in the 1920's, growing peas and potatoes on the Richmond Hills. The family also owned dairy stud farms, including the Sellbourne Stud. In 1932 they bought land 'on the flat' in Richmond and Stoke. Two Pedigree Jersey cows were included as part payment.

John married Miss Benseman during the 1920's Depression, her great aunt was married to Johann Heine.
