What is Anna Hill's Album?

This antique photograph album is part of the Waimea South Collection. It was purchased in about February of 1898, for 6 pound 10 shillings. 'Miss. Anna Hill, Brightwater, Nelson, N.Z' is written in pencil at the front of the album.

Maureen Barton, who inherited the album from her great uncle Ted Silcock has written a note about the album. It is glued in the front of the album.  "Ellen Hill (married George Johnson Silcock) later in life had a stroke and was bedridden. She died in 1914.  Anna Hill her youngest sister, most probably nursed her, hence the album of Hills and Silcocks. Edward (Ted) Silcock & wife Renee continued to look after Anna until her death."

According to her obituary in the 28 July 1937 Nelson Evening Mail, Anna Hill was born in November 1852. She was the youngest daughter of Thomas and Ann Hill (nee Ovens). Her siblings included Thomas, Quinton, Jabez, William, and Benjamin, and her two sisters, Mary (later Mrs Richard Palmer) and Ellen (later Mrs George Silcock)."When quite a little girl she went with her parents to live at the “Holly Bush,” a hotel situated near where the railway bridge now spans the Wairoa river, and whose licensee provided for ferrying travellers, for the river was not then bridged". For many years Miss Hill served in the Sunday School of St. Paul’s Church, as a teacher. She died in July 1937.
